The French call it lac Léman, which the Swiss call lac de Genève, an important lake in Western Europe.  The lake is slightly crescent-shaped, with the shores of the north and east and west sides belonging to the cantons of Vaud, Valais and Geneva, Switzerland, and the southern bank belonging to the French province of Haute-Savoie.  Switzerland and France account for 60% and 40% of the lake, respectively.  The lake is about 75 kilometers long from east to west, about 14 kilometers wide at the north and south, and has a water area of about 582 square kilometers. It is the second largest freshwater lake in Central Europe, second only to Lake Balaton.  Its deepest water depth is 310 meters, the lake water volume is estimated to be 88.9 cubic kilometers, and the drainage area is 7,975 square kilometers.  The shape of the new moon began to deform on the south bank of Iver, and was thus divided into the Grand Lac to the east and the Petit Lac to the west.

The lake flows through the Rhone River. The source of the river is located in the Rhone Glacier near the mouth of Grimsel in the east of the lake, flowing through the Valais and flowing into Villeneuve and Saint-Golf (Saint-  The lake between Gingolph).  Other tributaries include the River De Lance, the Oberna River, the Morges River, the Vonoges River and the River Vevez.  A section of the lake between Geneva and Lausanne is called La Côte, while a section between Lausanne and Vevey is called Lavaux, both famous wine regions.  The lake's first name since the Roman Empire was "Lacus Lemannus", whose origin is unknown, may be Celtic.  In the Middle Ages, different names such as Lacus Lausonius and Lacus Losanetes evolved.  When the Principality of Geneva was reached, the name Lake Geneva appeared.  In the 18th century, the writing of Lac Léman began to spread in France.  It is currently called Geneva Lake in Geneva, as is English.  Other residents along the lake are still called Lake Geneva.  Some maps indicate that the lake is Lac d'Ouchy since the construction of the port in Lausanne.
